Wavey Edged Elm Bowl
This great piece of natural art started life as an elm burl back in December 2022. It was turned green, meaning it was freshly cut and still had a lot of internal moisture, and was a perfectly round, thin-walled bowl. When left to dry naturally, thin walls will move and distort, giving a fantastic wavey edge effect, and an interesting texture to the surfaces.
In the many months of drying, this piece has not been a disappointment. The edges are waved, there are cracks and holes across the piece, and a grand array of red and golden brown colours, with many of the holes running all the way through the piece. Mother Nature truly worked her magic on this one, and it has become one of my favourite visual pieces.
There is a slight distortion on the base (it was not just the walls that moved), so will move if pressed, but it will sit stably on by itself.
The finish, pure tung oil, is a natural oil extracted from tung tree seeds. It gives a beautiful amber tone and does not leave any oily finish. The finish gives a fairly good water resistance too, though I would not recommend letting the piece get wet and drying it as soon as possible, otherwise, Mother Nature might try to add some more curves! Using gentle natural furniture or chopping board wax with a soft pad or cloth once a year will help keep the shine.
