Small Elm Burl Dish Round
One of my absolute favourite pieces to look at, this is a small dish with so much to see. This piece was cut from a small but very hard and dense elm burl, where the burl and bark were so tightly bound that the edge still holds much of the bark adding to the colour contrasts. It was unusually hard for elm, so a lot of time was spent shaping the piece… and sharpening my tools. There is a fantastic variation between the outer sapwood and dense burl swirls, giving a broad range of reds and browns. A truly beautiful example of natural art.
Finished with hard wax oil, this platter is technically food safe, but with the amount of holes, it is more suitable for artistic appreciation and as a talking point. Avoid getting this piece wet, while hard wax oil is water resistant, and I’ve tried to ensure all holes are coated inside, I cannot guarantee they’re 100% sealed, so moisture could still damage the wood.
Material: Scottish grown elm burl, sourced from Fyne Wood.
Size: H 3.5cm x W 16cm
